Sir Joseph Rotblat

Nobel Peace Price 1995

Nov. 4, 1908 - Aug. 31, 2005

 

Sir Joseph Rotblat is dead. We lost a great man, friend, and inspiration.

I heard Sir Joseph speak for the first time in April 1997, when he gave a lecture on the occasion of a visit to the Interdisciplinary Research Group Science, Technology and Security (IANUS) - the INESAP host group - at Darmstadt University of Technology.

With his characteristic smile, quiet voice, and lovely English, at age 89, he answered to a question that, yes, he was confident to live long enough to see the world turn nuclear weapons free. Sadly, he lost his strength before that. But in the course of his life he made a deep impression on many people like me, to whom he conveyed the urgency of the nuclear weapons issue.

We will not forget him, follow his call to remember our humanity and continue Sir Joseph's struggle to rid the world of nuclear weapons.
