Report on the INESAP 1996 Conference

"From Non-Proliferation towards a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World"

May 30 to June 2 1996 in Gothenborg, Sweden

The INESAP 1996 Conference took place from May 30 to June 2 near Gothenburg in Sweden. It was entitled "From Non-Proliferation towards a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World". It was organised by INESAP (International Network of Engineers and Scientists against Proliferation) in cooperation with Swedish FIMK (SSEANW - Swedish Scientist and Engineers against Nuclear Weapons) and IANUS (Technical University Darmstadt). Funds were granted by the Swedish Foreign Ministry and the Swedish Research Council FRN: Further money was contributed by Swedish FIMK and IANUS.

The conference was a success in gathering more than 30 active INESAP-participants and others who wanted to become involved in the planning process and implementation of the next years activities decided at the conference. The overall goal was to intesify the process of formulating a conceptual approach towards a nuclear-weapon-free world to be accomplished in a carefully outlined irreversible step-by-step process.

Results and plans for the future can be found elsewhere. This report covers some points of substance. The first session was opended by a talk given by the Pugwash Secretary-General Prof. Francesco Calogero on "A Nuclear-Weapon-Free-World: Desirable? Possible? Probable?" Another highlight was an excursion to Gothenburg with a harbour cruise followed by an reception at the Centre of Research Ethics. At the reception the host, Prof. Stellan Welin gave a talk on the role of ethics and politics in creating a NWFW.
